If you are doing business in Reading, Bracknell, Slough or in fact anywhere Britain's Thames Valley, M4 corridor, then you're remarkably close to one of Britain's most innovative and eclectic entertainment venues, Jagz "at the Station", Ascot.
Owner John Gripton like many of us was a seasoned international traveller. He'd experienced the frustration of landing in a new town and not knowing where to go to be entertained. He's spent those long hours, jet lagged in hotel bars and restaurants asking, "Is there any life here?".
When he retired he set up Jagz to see if he could address the gap in the market. As a result, the sleepy village of Ascot, a stone's throw from Windsor and Bracknell, has one of Britain's most dynamic, innovative and thriving venues.
In the one building, you can have a breakfast coffee in the European style cafe, a couple of casual after work drinks in the bar, eat in the cafe restaurant or dine in the jazz restaurant while watching a band. And after all that you can the end the evening, dancing into the wee hours, in the discotheque.
In fact Jagz boasts the European cafe, 4 bars, supper club and underground club. The whole venue is dedicated to music with jazz based sounds in the cafe, top live acts in the supper club and a wide range of dance music in the Underground Club.
While Jagz does offer jazz, it by no means is constrained to this genre. Each night of the week has a theme with associated differing music (see schedule below). Artists that have appeared there include, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express.
In recent months, in conjunction with the industrious music promoter Pete Feenstra, Jagz has supported the growing resurgence of 60's music. A host of original artists have appeared such as Roger Chapman (Family), Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone (Zombies). It also encompasses superb 60's cover bands such as the Rollin' Stoned and the Counterfeit Beatles.
We said eclectic. By that we mean Flamenco artists Palenke and Gemma de la Cruz from Madrid, Jazz Workshops and jam sessions, Blues from such as Robin Bibi Band and the occasional comedy club night.
The formula for Jagz is staggering and the repertoire highly stimulating. I've only seen this idea once before - in Australia, - where the hotels often take the central entertainment role in a community. Offering not just accommodation, but also a proper restaurant, a pub with a dance floor and live bands - all under one roof. The only missing element at Jagz is the hotel - but then there are several, just minutes away from the club. So why not stay in an Ascot hotel instead of in an (often soulless) Windsor, Bracknell, Slough or Reading one?
We look forward to reviewing the restaurant some time in the near future, but in the meantime feel ... There should be a Jagz in every hotel, creating high quality varied entertainment for both travellers and for the local populace alike. Delivering everything under one roof!
